Party! Pizza Movie! Reviewed

There is a lack of full-blown comedies today. Not to say there aren’t any comedies out there. What I mean to say is, there are movies with funny situations or some amalgam of comedy and blank. Rarely will you have a straight-up comedy. If they DO claim to be one, they just aren’t that funny.

That is until I saw Pizza Movie. I knew it existed but knew nothing about it. Only that Gaten Matarazzo was in it and…that was it. I didn’t even know its premise! However, I did notice it was being talked about among my peers. It wasn’t on my radar otherwise.

Pizza Movie was a surprise. Like an actual pizza, it had some good ingredients. A little Van Wilder here, some 21 Jump Street there, with a dash of Superbad thrown in. All the makings of an enjoyable watch. You can’t get anymore straightforward of a story either. Get high. Order pizza. Wait. It’s what occurs before, during, and after the waiting is the meat of this movie.

This is the very reason I love to go into movies blindly. If I had seen the trailer or listened to anyone’s thoughts on it, I might have been turned away or been spoiled on one of the many scenes that deserved knowing nothing. That’s when comedy works best. The punchline shouldn’t be predictable. Everything in Pizza Movie was anything but (heh-heh. “butt”).

May I use pizza again as a metaphor? Not every topping on a pizza is for everyone. Some people may not even like pizza (I know, crazy right?!). They’ll consume it because everyone else is. I love pizza. All kinds of pizza. Just because / enjoyed Pizza Movie, doesn’t mean you will. But as I tell my kid, just TRY it…who knows, maybe you’ll like it?

Boy, I’m getting hungry! I’m gonna order myself a pie.
